Chapter Nineteen
After we loaded into Heathâs truck, Carey in between us, I thought about how that call ended.
âHeâs going to ask why I was coming over.â
âYou were dropping off something Carey left at your house,â he said quickly. Simple white lie no one ever had to verify. âThat way, you werenât staying over and hanging out with me or her. Just dropping something off, then getting a move on. They wonât think anything of it.â
âWhy are you lying?â Carey frowned at us. âWerecats can smell lies, and she was just coming over for dinner. Will I have to lie, too? Lying is wrong.â
The scent of Heathâs regret was strong. I knew he didnât like lying to his daughter, and he just set a bad example of creating a lie for me to tell my family.
âWeâre not asking you to lie,â I said softly. âOnly that I will.â
âYeah, but why?â Carey crossed her arms. âBoth of you tell me lying is bad. Why is it you get shot at but need to lie about coming to have dinner with us? Weâre your friends.â
âWeâll talk about it later,â Heath said softly.
âWerecats and werewolves donât like each other. People donât like that your dad and I are friends, and they would prefer we stop being friends, Carey. You know that. Iâve explained it before.â
âBut youâve had dinner with us before, and they know about those, donât they? I mean, Dad goes to Kick Shot and hangs out with you every weekend.â
I didnât understand why Carey was attached to this. Her confusion was obvious, but one would think me bleeding in their dining room would allow a small white lie.
âCarey, this is complicated,â Heath tried to say.
âYouâre using me to lie. I donât want to be used for a lie that doesnât make any sense. I thought people didnât lie about who they were friends with if those friends were important to them.â
âYou and your dad are important to me,â I said softly. âHeath, she has to know. Itâs actually part of the reason I came over. Zuri figured us out.â
âFigured what out? I can help keep this big secret if someone tells me what it is.â When neither of us gave a reply, Carey slumped between us. âReally? I donât like this. I donât like knowing Jacky has to lie about coming over to dinner with us. Do you always do that?â
âYes,â I answered softly. âI never tell them about Heath and me hanging out away from Kick Shot, where heâs technically my customer.â
âWhy?â
âBecause we donât want them to find out Jacky and I are dating,â Heath answered, keeping his eyes on the road.
Careyâs eyes slowly widened. I waited as she absorbed the information.
âWhen did that start?â she asked, looking between us. âTell me, when did this start?â
âOfficially? My birthday last year, but we were already considering it after the werecats attacked me,â I explained. âCarey, itâs not smart for your dad and me to be together. People will think it a betrayal. They wonât understand, so we have to keep it a secret.
